The United States, A Democracy!

We call our country a Democracy. A Democracy means government by the people, not by a king, not by a dictator, not by a rich man and his friends, but government by the people (also called the citizens).

When our country was small, citizens got together in a meeting hall to talk about the laws they needed. Then they voted on them. We call this Direct Democracy.

Now our country is very big. We can't fit in a meeting hall. So we choose (or elect) people to do the job for us, to get together and talk about the laws we need, and pass those laws. We say those people represent us. We call them our Representatives. And we now call our country a Representative Democracy.

We vote for people (our Representatives) to do what we need and want them to do. If we like how they represent us, we vote for them again. If we don't like how they represent us, we don't vote for them again; we vote for someone else.
